We believe that in preventive dentistry, which means we aim to prevent the two main causes of tooth loss: decay and gum disease. As part of this philosophy, we recommend that our patients attend routine check-ups at least once every six months. Those with a clean bill of dental health may be advised to see us for a check-up once a year, whilst those showing signs of potential problems or existing dental health issues may be advised to visit the practice more regularly.
What happens during a routine check up?
During your appointment, Mark or Dan will check your medical history to ensure there are no changes which could have an impact on your oral health. They will ask you if you have had any problems since the last time you visited the practice, or if you have any concerns about any aspect of your teeth, gums or home care routine.
Your dentist will examine your teeth and any restorations you already have, such as fillings, for signs of wear or damage and compare their observations to your most recent x-rays. If they see anything which requires fixing or replacing, they will take a small x-ray to confirm their diagnosis and will advise you to book another appointment. They will check the health of your gums by carrying out a Basic Periodontal Examination, and may suggest making some small adaptations to your usual home care routine or may advise that you book an extra appointment with one of our experienced hygienists.
Mark or Dan will complete a screening for oral cancer, following the 12 step protocol advised by the Mouth Cancer Foundation. This involves checking for any abnormalities around your mouth and checking the inside of your mouth, including your tongue, gums and cheeks.
If everything’s fine, then we will see you again in six months and hopefully not before!
